Biking
around Toronto on Saturday May 12, 2007.
Starting down at Lake Ontario at Toronto's Cherry Beach I begin my journey of parts of Toronto using my trusty bicycle. I like this picture because it looks like the tree is really part of my hair. In the background is one of the lifesaving stations found on Toronto's beaches. Following the bike path past windsurfers out on the Lake I come to the decommissioned Hearn thermal electrical generating plant. They have been ripping the stuff out of this plant and I found some interesting looking turbine parts piled on their property awaiting further disposal. Later I followed the Leslie Street Spit or Tommy Thompson Park as it heads southwest into Lake Ontario. The man made peninsula is an important bird habitat area as well as a major urban wilderness along Toronto's waterfront. I was surprised to find a big pile of concrete streetlight poles and large metal safes became part of the fill. Heading up to Lakeshore I ride past the remnants of the Gardiner Expressway left as a sculpture - which I think is pretty neat. I later enter the historic "pedestrians only" Toronto Distillery District which has been expanding as a cultural and recreational destination. On this night the site hosts the 2007 Fashion Cares PEEPS event to help raise funds to fight HIV/AIDS. Jay Manuel led the event with help from others including George Stroumboulopoulos and Dita Von Teese (I got a small video clip of her during the dress rehearsal - see it here on YouTube). From what I could see and hear this event would be fabulous to attend - although it is quite expensive.
Continuing to Toronto City Hall I was disappointed to have missed the mass pillow fight which was held at 3:00PM in Nathan Phillips Square - I will have to try harder next year to find out when it is being held and take pictures of the rambunctious free for all. After 5 hours biking in Toronto I called it a day and headed back to the small town of Acton. |
