Biking
around Toronto, Ontario Lakefront - including Centre Island.
It is a warm summers evening when Joe and I get into Toronto, parking near Lake Ontario, to begin our bike ride to Toronto's Centre Island. Queens Quay is full of people and a concert is set up at the ampitheatre. We pay our $6 adult fares and wait for one of the two ferries that allow bikes. Ward's ferry comes first so we travel out from the mainland terminal towards the east part of the islands.
The ferry ride is a quick trip in Toronto Harbour but dusk quickly approaches and the sun sets behind the city. The crowds are mostly coming back into the city at this time and so our ferry is not that busy. We see a great swarm of bikers coming up the path on Centre Island and run into a bicycle patrol comprised of Toronto Police and Toronto Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. They stop for a group photo along the edges of Lake Ontario. They are a great group and after a short pause they return to their duties and climb back aboard their bikes - some going east and some going west.
We return to City of Toronto by way of the Hanlan's Point ferry and we head west towards Ontario Place where the Symphony of Fire has a fireworks show scheduled for 10:30 pm. Advertising on traffic lights and hydro poles make me stop for a photo. "Flick Off" is Ontario's campaign to reduce energy consumption and reminds us of a rude phrase while the poster in the background is for a "Bikini Booty Camp" surely part of Health Canada's efforts to get us to exercise more. The fireworks are reflected in the waters of a yacht club near the Tip Top Tailors condo and across from the Island Airport. |
