The sun returns

James Hamilton in a High Voltage Transmission Station

The blue sky returns to the GTA for awhile this week. The sun managed to hang around a bit after the cold snap and heavy snowfalls in late December and during New Years. The heater was suddenly on and suddenly we broke records in Ontario for warm temperatures. I was listening to the radio and I vaguely remember that we had only 48 hours of sunlight in December of 2007 - talk about seasonal affective disorder! I tried to confirm the amount of sunlight on the web but couldn't find anything but a satellite image of the world sunlight map. The picture above is of me in a high voltage transmission station enjoying the sunshine. At dusk the sun started to drop below the Niagara Escarpment as I made my way home to Acton.

Acton indoor soccer

Acton indoor soccer arena

Erin starts her winter under 13 soccer league in the Acton indoor soccer arena. The facility is excellent and it is surprising how quite the arena was. Usually with kids soccer the parents are screaming encouragement to the kids. Maybe this will change after time. They put in a good effort and won their first game.

Martino drops by

James Hamilton, Ann Hamilton, Martino Tulino enjoy a cocktail

We had a great night when Martino (right) dropped by - including having a few cocktails. The cool belinis have created a layer of frost around the metal martini glasses. Maybe it wasn't a great idea to have a cold metal near our tongues! Martino has returned from an extended vacation out west and also into France and Switzerland. He has started work building La Rocca's Creative Cakes (mmm good cakes) new facility in Richmond Hill as a super working for Urbacon. Sobeys sell La Rocca's cakes and I must admit that we have bought a few of them (mmm caramel crunch).

Winter snow

snow on adirondack chairs

After the latest snow melt we return to winter in Ontario - Noooooooooo! On Monday morning we awoke to a few inches of fresh new snow (here in our backyard covering the adirondack chairs). During the weekend the temperatures drop like an anvil in an aquarium with temps hovering at -13 degrees celcius during the day. Watching the weather channel showed that the prairies were hitting temperatures of -45 degress celcius so we aren't as bad off as they are.

We had discussions with Joe and have decided to go together to Quebec City, Quebec in June to take in their air show (QIAS) and among other things go watch some whales in the St Lawrence River at Tadoussac. Quebec will celebrate it's 400th anniversary this year and the air show will have an amazing gathering of flying teams, musical talent and fireworks. While we have only been to Montreal in the past we have long heard of the draw of Quebec city with it's historic and cultural attractions and the air show just adds another reason to visit. Ann has also always wanted to go see whales and while the location is some distance away from Quebec City it is a possible once in a lifetime chance for us that we don't want to miss. Plus the people in Quebec have been very nice to us and we look forward to returning to the Belle province.

If you know of any great deals, can't miss places to see or wan't to give us advice about Quebec City, the whales or the air show please don't hesitate to send us an email.

It's a windy day

The Big Apple - Colborne, Ontario

Winter storm warnings began last night as high winds and a quick freeze came into Ontario. Luckily it didn't interfere during the daily commute and we didn't get hit with much snow.

During the past weekend we were looking for something to do and Joe suggested going down to Nathan Phillips Square to see the Nights of Fire which is part of the WinterCity Festival in Toronto. I provide the following quote from yahoo about the event "Experience the enchantment of Nights of Fire, magically created by Cie Carabosse, France's acclaimed fire art troupe in Toronto for their North American premiere. Fuel the flames of your imagination as you wander among intricate sculptures of metal, clay and fire that will transform Nathan Phillips Square into a wonderland of warmth and light". We headed out on Saturday evening but the weather was bad and we approached an accident on Highway 7 just east of Acton so we decided to play it safe and returned home and skipped the adventure.

I dig into previous adventures and remember visiting The Big Apple in Colborne, Ontario (November 2005). I had gone to Kingston and on the way back signs along Highway 401 pointed towards the tourist spot so I takes a chance as I am curious about this apple. It was big, round and red and I took the above picture and departed.

I continue to take pictures and videos with my kodak point and shoot camera (the Z7590) and post some of the videos to youtube.com with links on my site. I posted a couple of videos from the Fergus Truck Show (July 2007 see my webpage about the visit here) one of which has become my highest rated video - as of today it has over 46 200 views (wow, it's hard to believe) - see it here. That video was of a big rig pull, here is a picture of one of the smaller farm tractors starting a pull.
