Swift
Rapids Dam on the Trent - Severn Waterway, our journey continues
The lock
by the dam
The lock, aptly
titled the Swift Rapids Lock, brings part of the river into a concrete
channel both upstream and downstream of the lock. As the following sign
notes Lock 43 is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway - A National Historic
Site of Canada.
Massive doors
hold in the water and as the lock sits empty, unused during this early
part of the year, the actual size and depth of the lock is surprising -
it takes a lot of water to fill.
The Dam and Lock
site include a bathroom and the operators elevated platform.
Looking upstream
from the large back doors.
At the downstream
end of the Locks with the operators elevated platform at the top left.
Looking downstream
from on top of the Lock. The main river channel runs through the left hand
side of the picture while the right channel is part of the Lock system.
Besides the Dam
and Lock the colony has been reduced to ruble of assorted foundations and
collapsed wooden structures except for one building which houses the Dam
operator.
And so our visit
ends, another enjoyable adventure and much less work than original journey
in a canoe.
Thanks for keeping
us company. |
